What a freelance invoice needs
- Your details and your client's — legal or trading name, address, and email on both sides. Add tax IDs if either of you is VAT/GST registered.
- A unique invoice number — sequential numbering (INV-2026-001, 002…) keeps your records audit-friendly and makes payments easy to reference.
- Issue date and due date — "due in 14 days" is the freelance norm; 30 days is common with larger companies.
- Line items that describe outcomes — "Website copywriting — 4 pages" gets paid faster than "services rendered", because the person approving it can see what they got.
- Payment instructions — bank transfer details or a payment link in the notes, so paying you takes one step.

Do freelancers legally need to send invoices?
In most jurisdictions, yes, once you're operating as a business — and even where it isn't mandatory, clients' accounting departments will ask for one. A numbered, dated invoice also protects you if a payment is disputed.
Should I charge per project or per hour on the invoice?
Bill the way you quoted. Per-project lines read better for deliverables (a logo, a landing page); hourly lines suit open-ended work. This template handles both — quantity × rate covers hours as well as units.
