Hourly invoice template
The simplest honest invoice: hours ร rate, a clear period, and a due date. The template multiplies and totals for you, and the PDF is one click. Your numbers never leave your device.
Making hourly billing painless
- State the period โ "Consulting services โ 1โ15 September" in the description makes each invoice self-contained.
- Round consistently โ pick an increment (15 or 30 minutes) and use it every time; consistency is what makes a time log defensible.
- Offer the log, don't attach it โ "detailed time log available on request" in the notes keeps the invoice clean and signals you have nothing to hide.
- Invoice often โ weekly or fortnightly for active engagements. Small regular invoices get paid from habit; large surprise ones get scrutinized.
A worked example
| Description | Qty | Rate | Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consulting services | 10 | $95.00 | $950.00 |
| Total due | $950.00 | ||
Quantity accepts decimals โ 7.5 hours works exactly as you'd expect.

Can I mix hourly and fixed lines on one invoice?
Yes โ each line has its own quantity and rate, so an hourly line can sit next to a fixed-price one (use quantity 1 for fixed amounts). One invoice per client per period is easier for everyone than several small ones.
What if the client disputes the hours?
Send the time log, and keep future logs granular (task, date, duration). Disputes almost always come from surprise, not distrust โ which is another argument for invoicing frequently.
